Only 100 days until Beijing! (Olympics start 8-8-08, updated on 4-30-08)

“I don’t believe in failure, only results! If I can change what I do, I can always get a different result. Some of the greatest miracles of my life have not come about by grand events, but rather by the little things I have chosen to do every day.”

                                                - Art Berg (world-class wheelchair athlete)

Coach's Corner (updated)

Swim Indy is now operating as Brownsburg Swim Club!

You may notice some changes around the pool or on the web. This is due to our transition to BBSC. Our team has made a home at the Bulldog Aquatic Center in Brownsburg High School. Now that we can identify with a community, we are adopting a community persona. Thank you to all of the parents, board members, and coaches that have made this long process a dream come true.

May Practice Schedule

The practice schedule for the first three weeks of May has been posted at the pool and on the club website. Please note that at the end of May, an extensive construction project will begin at Brownsburg High School. This project will affect the entrances to the pool and will necessitate a few days of the pool being closed. As of now, the pool will be closed due to construction on Friday, May 23 and is scheduled to re-open on Thursday, May 29. Training arrangements are in the works and will be announced ASAP. Please be patient with this process! If you have any questions, please contact Coach Josh ASAP.

Spring Novice Group

The spring Novice Group has begun, and there is room for more swimmers! Novice will run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (with the exception of Memorial Day and possibly graduation day at Brownsburg) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Brownsburg High School, through May 30. If you have questions or know of anyone interested in Novice, please contact Coach Josh.

Team Banquet

Thanks to everyone who pitched in food and attended the team banquet on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and it was great to see such a large turnout!

Individual Parent / Swimmer Meetings

There are still opportunities to signup for an individual parent / swimmer meet for all swimmers in the Gold, Senior Development and Senior groups. These meetings are valuable opportunities for families to discuss the upcoming season with their group coach. Signup sheets are posted on the office door. If the available slots don’t work for you, please let your group coach know and an alternative arrangement can be made. All meetings will be held in the Brownsburg High School pool classroom.

Club Social Activity – Signups Open!!!

Signup sheets are on the door to the coach office for our team bowling activity! Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10. The activity begins at 1 p.m. at Brownsburg Bowl (18 Whittington Drive, Brownsburg, IN, 46112). The cost is $10.95 per person, and includes unlimited games for 2 hours, plus shoes, snacks and drinks. Details for the event are also posted with the signup sheets. If you have any questions, or to pay for your family members who will be attending the event, please contact Coach Andy.

BBSC Summer Splash

The next meet on the schedule is our home meet, the BBSC Summer Splash (June 6-8 @ Brownsburg High School). This is our big event for the summer and we need a full team effort! Swimmers, please signup to participate in this meet and parents, keep your eyes peeled for volunteer signups as the date gets closer. We need all of our awesome volunteers in full force!

Carmel “Splash, Flash & Dash” Results

Several BBSC swimmers (and one dad) participated in the Carmel Swim Club sprint triathlon last weekend. Two Bulldogs were age group winners: Katie Ancel (15-19 women) and Ashlee Hammer (15-16 youth). Katie was 167th overall in the adult race, while Ashlee was 28th overall in the youth race. Overall finishes for the other Bulldog triathletes are: Zach Laffin (118th), Eric Waggoner (133rd), Andy Ancel (218th), Janet Watson (241st) and Elizabeth Ancel (301st). Way to go Bulldogs!

Meet Fees / No Shows

There were several “no shows” at one of the meet this season, so I wanted to take a moment to give everyone an overview of the protocol for entering meets. Our families signup for the meets online and via hard copy, and the coaches build the meet entries from this information. The entries are then submitted to the host club. Upon acceptance to the meet, teams are now responsible for paying for their entries. However, the host club always allows an opportunity to make changes to the entries, including additions and deletions. And our meet entries are always posted to the club website for your review. If you know ahead of time that you will not be able to attend a meet you have previously signed up for, please alert the coaching staff so the changes can be made, and you are not billed for events you don’t swim! If you have any questions about entering meets and meet billing, please contact Coach Josh.

A couple folks have asked about equipment items, so we’d like to again publish the username and password to our custom page at Action Accents, our equipment provider. We are contracted with TYR through Action Accents, and there are also a number of training items on our custom page, in addition to our team suits.

Meet Photos

Floswimming.com

There’s a new swimming website out there with a lot of cool content, www.floswimming.com. The site has interviews with coaches and swimmers, articles and news from around the swimming world as well as meet results and other features. The best part about the site, however, is a section called “workout videos.” This section features 6 to 8 minute videos shot at practices from various elite level programs around the country. The videos show the swimmers training, but also feature explanation from the coaches regarding the training sets the swimmers are doing. It offers a lot of insight, and a glimpse into the training environment of world class athletes. Check it out, and see if you have what it takes to be the best!

Website Worth Checking Out

There’s a new swimming website out there that is worth checking out for anyone interested in the sport. Deckpass.com is a weekly internet radio podcast / broadcast hosted by Nathan Jendrick (husband of Olympic medalist Megan Jendrick) and U. S. Olympian Scott Goldblatt. The duo cover a number of subjects from training to coaching philosophy or just discussions about swimming in general, and frequently have guests. The latest show featured an interview with Paul Yetter, the coach of world record holder Katie Hoff. The episodes of Deckpass range from 45 to 90 minutes long and can be downloaded for free into iTunes and other internet media players. If you’re interested, check out Deckpass.com for your weekly dose of news from around the swimming world.

Action Accents

With so many new swimmers on the team this season, we want to make sure everyone gets outfitted in the team suit for our competitions. Part of being a team is looking like a team! To that end, please visit Action Accents online. Our custom team page is now password protected.

Team suits are available on our team page as well as practice suits and training equipment, and team caps are available from the coaching staff. If you’re looking for an additional good deal on practice suits, the website www.discountswim.com is offering the “Ugglies” practice suits (bright colors, floral prints) for $19.99 each.

Podcasts

For all of you swimming fans with iPods out there, the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and United States Swimming (USAS) have both begun providing free podcasts, available from their respective websites that you can download into iTunes. On the ASCA site (www.swimmingcoach.org) the link to subscribe is on the upper right portion of the page. On the USAS site (www.usaswimming.org) the link is on the upper left. The subjects of these podcasts range from interviews with the USA’s brightest starts, to coaches discussing philosophy, goals and other topics. If you’re interested, check it out!

Create a My USA Swimming Page

All registered athletes have the opportunity to create their own personalized USA Swimming account. You will have access to all of your times from all of the meets you have swum, a season summary and your IMX scores.
